imagesNathuram Vinayak Godse is a name every Indian knows because it spells terror. This man ended the life of the Father of the Nation with three bullets.

Godse was an activist with Hindu nationalist organizations Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Hindu Mahasabha. On 30th January 1948, Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi three times in the chest at point blank range outside the Birla House, New Delhi.
Godse was put on trial at the Punjab High Court on 8th November 1949. Although pleas for commutation were made by Gandhi’s two sons, Manilal Gandhi and Ramdas Gandhi, the pleas were turned down and Godse was hanged at Ambala Jail on 15th November, 1949.

The link between Godse and the RSS is not unknown. The Hindu Mahasabha, one of the chief architects behind the assassination of Gandhi has admitted the involvement of RSS behind the murder. Godse’s own brother, Gopal Godse has clearly stated that all the Godse brothers were the members of RSS at the time of the assassination.
According to the statement given by Gopal Godse :-
“All the brothers were in the RSS.
Nathuram, Dattatreya, myself and Govind. You can say we grew up in the RSS rather than in our home. It was like a family to us. Nathuram became a baudhik karyavah (intellectual worker) in the RSS. He said in his statement that he left the RSS. He said it because Golwalkar and the RSS were in a lot of trouble after the murder of Gandhi. But he did not leave the RSS.”

With the rise of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) from the year 2014, the BJP together with the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha have left no stone unturned in an attempt to portray Godse as a patriot. A documentary film with the title Desh Bhakt Nathuram Godse (Patriot Nathuram Godse) was all set to release on 30th January, 2015 on the death anniversary of Gandhi. There were attempts to build a temple for Godse as well as to celebrate 30th January as Shaurya Diwas (Bravery Day).

Fuelled by the spirit of hatred fostered by the RSS, the BJP seeks to destroy Gandhism to the core. The BJP’s anti-dalit attitude and increasing Dalit oppression under BJP-RSS rule is a clear reflection of their mindset. The increasing atrocities in India against the beloved “harijans” of Bapu who had worked all his life to destroy the evils of caste system and untouchability reflects the anti Gandhi attitude of the BJP-RSS duo. Instances of Dalit oppression right from Rohit Vemula, Delta Meghwal to the recent attacks on Dalits in Gujarat is alarming indeed.

The furious and destructive party spirit of the BJP is in full swing against the Dalits.
It successfully plays a double role of praising Gandhi abroad and portraying Godse as a patriot back home. To protect itself, it has broken out in falsehood, detraction, calumny and a partial administration of justice. It seeks to destroy all seeds of humanity and good nature. As to those who haven fallen prey to the brainwashing done by BJP-RSS, I seek to give no advice but only quote a few lines from Plutarch —
“A man should not allow himself to hate even his enemies, because, if you indulge this passion in some occasions, it will rise to itself in others; you will contract such a vicious habit of mind, as by degrees will break upon those who are your friends or who are indifferent to you”.

Perhaps this spirit of hatred is a reason why today in India, you must either be a follower of BJP or be branded as an anti-national. Even in this pathetic situation that India has been driven into, we must not lose faith in humanity. Mahatma Gandhi said —
“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean ; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the whole ocean does not become dirty.”
