Unlike a joker going places and making us a butt of jokes. There was Rajiv Gandhi whose charm intoxicated people everywhere he went. The whole world was in awe of the young Indian Prime Minister.
It was on 13th June,1985 that for the
first time an Indian Prime Minister got a standing ovation from both houses of the Congress. There was as they called it the “Rajiv phenomenon in America”. A leading Washington attorney called the young, energetic and pragmatic Rajiv Gandhi “a smash hit”. The honour of addressing a joint session of the Congress had been given to only one Indian leader before Rajiv Gandhi and that was to his grandfather Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1949.
While addressing the Congress he began with a reference to Jawaharlal Nehru who over three decades ago from the same forum, had offered India’s “friendship and cooperation to the American people in the pursuit of justice, liberty and peace”.
Rajiv ended his speech with these touching lines. He said “India is an old country but a young nation: and like the young everywhere we are impatient. I am impatient and I too have a dream. I dream of an India – strong, independent, self reliant and in the front rank of the nations of the world in the service of mankind”. Unlike a joker dragging us back into the 12th century there was Rajiv Gandhi who’s truly the maker of modern India and the Father of the IT Revolution in India. Digital India was given to us by him and not this pathological liar who tends to steal credit of other people’s hard work. Today we miss Rajiv Gandhi and his leadership more than ever.
