As the UDF government led by Indian National Congress is heading to complete its 5 years in power after being elected to power in May 18 2011, it time to look back at the achievements and shortcomings of the government.
The dream of Kochi metro was made into a reality by UDF government. Kochi Metro is an under-construction metro system for the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. The first phase is being set up at an estimated cost of ₹5181 crore. Its is expected to start its service from November 1, 2016. A long standing demand of Malabaries of having a Airport at Kannur was heard by this government. Test run of Kannur airport has been completed and works are progressing as rapid rate. Kerala is all set to becomes the state with four international aiports. Works also have been started at Vizhinjam to setup Vizhinjam International Seaport. 5552 crore rupees have been allotted for it and is expected to complete by 1000 days. Also the first phase of Smart City which is expected to give jobs for 90,000 people, has been completed. Kerala’s native language, Malayalam was recongnised nationally after it was given “Sreshta Bhasa” title. The other language which were awarded the title along Malayalam, were Tamil, Kannada, Thelungu and Samskritham.
Telling the numbers, appointments made by PSC was all time record. Till decemeber 2015, 1,46,701 got appointments. Also after a gap of 5 years, 1182 differently abled people were given government jobs. 540 crores of rupees have been released form CM’s Distress Relief Fund during this government’s tenure. Only 120.24 crore rupees were released during last government’s tenure. To provide food for all, 3,500 crore ruppes were subsidized to distribute rice at Re. 1 per kilogram.
During this government, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy started the big initiative of “Janasamparka paripady” with an aim of addressing the problems of the people and settling long lasting complaints. 7.89 lakhs of complaints were settled. This initiative was accepted widely accepted and won the prestigious United Nations Global Award for Public Service in 2013. This government also won may other awards including IBN 7 diamond state for excelling in the areas of education, health, nature and eradicating poverty. Also state of states award by India Today for the year 2013 was won by kerala for its achievements in both economic growth and human development. Kerala also won the e-governance prize for local governments given by central government two times. Another laurel was that, Kerala tourism was awarded “Tourism’s Oscar”, Ulysses award for Responsible Tourism Project at Kumarakom. Also since 2012 kerala has continuously won the National Energy Conservation Award. It also won the India power award in 2014 during UDF government’s tenure.
Kerala Right To Service Act, 2012 was passed by thing government which will ensure that the common gets the service of the government. To bring transparency to governance, chief ministers office is liver telecasted for 24 hours and assets of ministers were published in the site After this government came to power, it showed that its primary goal is development of kerala by successfully completing 100 days programe during which 107 schemes were announced. Out of 107, 102 has been completed.
The record of building most bridges is also owned by this government, by building 245 bridges at a cost of 1,600 crore rupess. Sabiramala Master Plan was allotted a sum of 61 crores. Zero waste Sabarimala was implemented and treatment plant was set up at Sannidhanam to maintain cleanliness at the holy place. Another dream come true thing was Indian Institute of Technology at Palakkad. Classes have already commenced. IIT is to bet set up at 440 acres of land near Kanjakode. Also Cochin International Airport Limited was made hundred percent energy efficient by setting up solar energy.
Another mighty step taken was the decision to close down 730 bars and 78 BEVCO outlets. Although it has had to face tough fight from bar owners and the opposition which was against closing down bars, the government took the bold step. Its has also been decided to close down 10% BEVCO outlets per year. Lottery mafia was also shown the doors by this government. The government took over the lottery system and gave jobs to hundreds of people. Also the profit from Karunya lottery was used for the needy patients to meet their hospital expenses.
Startup village at Kalamassery has grown as a model for other governments. For the financial year 2014-15, 7.84 lakh rupees was the turnover from these startups. Also to promote young entrepreneurs, loan upto 20 laks rupees was extended. Till now 2,834 projects have been selected for funding. Police university and technological university was also set up by this government.
Kerala hosted the 35th national games and was a grand success. The Run kerala Run initiative, which was done to promote National games as a grand success. Applauses and congratulations for the government came from different corners for successfully hosting the national games.
